Do you have the right extinguisher for the fire?
Different types of fires require certain types of fire extinguishers to tackle the fire effectively. Water for paper, CO2 for electrical fires etc. Using the wrong extinguisher can make the fire worse, and even endanger the user. That is why it’s extremely important to have the correct extinguishers for your business to deal with the fires you might experience.

Types of fire extinguishers
Water Fire
Red fire extinguishers use water and are ideal for putting out Class A fires.

Foam Fire
Cream fire extinguishers use foam to put out both Class A and Class B fires.

Powder Fire
The dry powder in blue fire extinguishers is suitable for Class A, B and C fires and fires involving electrical equipment. Class D (metal) fires need a specialist powder extinguisher.

CO2 Fire
CO2 makes black fire extinguishers effective for class B and class E fires.

Wet Chemical
Used for oil fires in kitchens as a Class F and Class A fire extinguisher

Just having a fire extinguisher is not enough. Fire extinguishers lose their effectiveness over time.
They can also get damaged, so need to be checked regularly to make sure they’re ready for service when you need them. After all, would you want to be in front of a fire with a non-functioning fire extinguisher?
Fire extinguishers need servicing annually, with most extinguishers requiring an extended service every 5 years. Your fire extinguisher service includes complete checking of the extinguisher condition and components to prolong the life of the extinguisher.
Extended fire extinguisher services include complete discharging and refilling, to ensure the contents are fresh and the extinguisher is working as intended.
The variation to this rule is the black label CO2 fire extinguishers, which require refurbishing 10 years after manufacture.
Regular servicing protects you, the people you work with and your business.

As a trusted provider since 1993, Fire Alarm Systems delivers customised fire extinguisher supply, servicing and maintenance to businesses and commercial properties throughout the area.
A dry powder extinguisher is suitable for tackling most types of fire, and this extinguisher can be identified by the blue band.
This extinguisher can be used for fire classes A, B, C, and electrical fires.
The powder agent within this fire extinguisher is a multipurpose dry chemical, and works by creating a barrier between the fuel element and the oxygen element on class A fires.
Water and foam extinguishers which are placed outside, or in areas with no heating, are susceptible to freezing.
In this situation, the extinguisher would not function and should be taken out of service and replaced.
Follow the PASS system:
- Pull the pin
- Aim towards fire
